In the most part, the food served at The Ship is all cooked fresh on the premises from scratch.  The spirit we take to whatever we cook is to use good quality, local, sustainable or organic ingredients, and to stay closely connected to the seasons.

For us, sourcing locally and sustainably isn’t just about it being better for the animals, for people’s health, for the environment, for the local economy – though that aspect’s obviously key. It’s also because it’s nice to eat things when it’s the right time of year to be eating them, things stay fresher when they’ve less far to go, things even taste better when you know they’ve been grown or caught nearby.  We think that when you’re by the sea you want fish that’s come out of that sea, and when it’s freezing cold and you’ve been out walking on the beach you want to come back and sit by a fire and eat something comforting like toad in the hole, and that it’s nice to know the sausages came from the butchers up the road (as long as they’re good sausages of course), and that the pig who gave it’s life for the good of that sausage had not had too sorry an existence….

STYLE OF COOKING

The type of food you can expect to see on the menu is probably best described as consisting of a combination of pretty straight forward pub dishes (with perhaps a bit of a twist), and some more adventurous specials. So expect the usual favourites such as a Ploughmans with home-made porkpie and piccalilli, potted shrimps, breaded local cod with chips & smashed peas, the house burger – that sort of thing, as well as dishes like pork, chipotle and black bean stew, skate wing, ricotta stuffed courgettes, rabbit & lentil broth (below) and so on. (see ‘menus’ page of the website for further details).

ABOUT THE DRINKS

Our wine list is pretty extensive and varied enough to suit most palettes and budgets, and we use a few local vineyards too.

East Sussex and Kent are really good for cider & wine – there are some great orchards, apple pits & vineyards to go and see. If you’re interested, let us know and we can arrange it for you.

As spirits go, we’ve all the special ones, like Hendricks Gin, Havana Club, Patron Tequila, Makers Mark bourbon, Zabrowka, our own moonshine (home-infused seasonally flavoured vodkas), and so on.

If cocktails are your thing, you’ll be guaranteed the best bloody mary, champagne mojito or illy martini south of the Dartford crossing. We have a good selection of lagers, Leffe, Hoegarden, etc, we’ve local ales from Harveys & Rother Valley, and local cider (sometimes mulled when it’s cold) from Oakwood Farm.
